510 Hikers creates welcoming pathways to nature for underrepresented communities in the Bay Area, fostering health, confidence, and belonging through inclusive outdoor experiences. We organize weekly group hikes that combine education, safety training, and community building while partnering with organizations like REI and Patagonia to ensure everyone has access to proper gear and knowledge.
We envision outdoor spaces where everyone feels they belong—spaces where "we out here" represents not just presence, but empowerment, education, and the confidence to explore nature safely and joyfully.
For 10 years, 510 Hikers has been building community through countless group hikes, epic adventures like Half Dome in Yosemite, kids' hikes, and men's unity hikes. We've created a movement that encourages everyone to get outside, take up space, and try something new.
Love for the outdoors was planted early by 510 Hikers Founder, Nicholas Collins, who's parents took him and his siblings into nature every weekend, exploring the East Bay trails of Oakland, California. This foundation led Collins to a successful track and cross country career from fifth grade through college at Cal State Long Beach, where running became both a passion and a path away from neighborhood troubles. After years in Los Angeles raising his son, Collins' return to the Bay Area in 2014 brought a pivotal moment—a hike at Mission Peak where the complete absence of African Americans on the trails sparked his realization about the disconnect between people of color and outdoor spaces.
In 2015, the first 510 Hikers meeting was organized at Mission Peak with just one person showing up, but determination and social media outreach gradually built momentum. Within months, over 100 hikers were gathering consistently each weekend, mostly people of color who had been waiting to feel invited and welcome in outdoor spaces. The community discovered that representation mattered—seeing someone of color providing instruction, demonstrating leadership, and offering encouragement created the comfort and ease that people were seeking on the trails.
Ten years later, 510 Hikers has grown into a movement with 14,000 Facebook members and has fundamentally changed the demographics of Bay Area trails on weekend mornings. What started as fitness events evolved into something deeper—a community where friendships flourish, weddings celebrate connections made on trails, and people of color can pursue their love of hiking and running without feeling like minorities. The trail runs and hikes have become secondary to creating spaces where everyone can enjoy nature without abandoning their community or racial identity to do it.
Today, 510 Hikers continues to expand its impact through diverse programming including men's unity hikes, kids' hikes, large group adventures, the annual American River rafting trip, and the upcoming 5K/10K walk/run at Lake Merritt. The hope is that this movement will continue to inspire others across the country to create welcoming outdoor communities in their own regions, proving that representation and inclusion in nature isn't just possible—it's transformative for individuals, families, and entire communities seeking healthier, more connected lives.
